Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide. It is commonly used for temporary refrigeration as CO₂ does not have a liquid state at normal atmospheric pressure and sublimates directly from the solid state to the gas state.

What’s dry ice used for?

Dry ice is used for freezing at ultra-low temperatures or freeze drying without using water to preserve food, extending its shelf life. Dry ice can also be used for keeping foodstuff cool, such as on aircraft where refrigeration systems are not available.

Is it safe to use dry ice in drinks?

No, do not swallow dry ice or touch it with bare skin. Dry ice is extremely cold (-109.3° F or -78.5° C) and touching it can cause frostbite or burns. Can you put dry ice in a drink? Dry ice is safe for using in cocktails, as long as you avoid swallowing and use gloves and tongs during handling.

How long will dry ice last?

approximately 24 hours

Dry ice will last approximately 24 hours when stored in a styrofoam cooler. However, this period only applies to a regular-sized cooler holding up to 2 dry ice blocks. The dry ice will last about 3-4 days in large styrofoam with more dry ice blocks.

Can I make dry ice at home?

It’s actually pretty simple, and you can make it with things you might already have in your home. A CO2 fire extinguisher is full of compressed carbon dioxide—by releasing it quickly, the gas expends rapidly, cools, and condenses becoming dry ice.
