NearMe.co.za is an independent business directory for South Africa. This notice explains what personal information we process, why, and the rights you have under the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).
This notice was prepared as a working draft and has not been reviewed by a legal practitioner. Have it checked before you rely on it.
Who is responsible
NearMe.co.za is the responsible party for the personal information described here. Our contact details are on our contact page.
What we collect
- Site usage data. Pages viewed, approximate location derived from your IP address, browser and device type, and referring site. This is collected by our analytics and statistics tools.
- Information you send us. If you contact us to correct or remove a listing, we keep what you send so we can act on it and show why a change was made.
- Business listing data. Names, addresses, phone numbers and websites of businesses. Where a business is run by an individual, that information can be personal information.
We do not ask for or store payment details, identity numbers, or passwords.
Where listing data comes from
Business listings are drawn from the Overture Maps Foundation Places dataset, published under the Community Data License Agreement (Permissive) 2.0, which aggregates openly licensed mapping sources. We publish it as recorded there. We do not publish opening hours, because that dataset does not carry verified hours.
Why we process it
- To show you nearby businesses relevant to your search.
- To measure which pages are used so we can improve them.
- To investigate and act on correction or removal requests.
- To keep the site secure and available.
Our lawful basis is our legitimate interest in operating a public directory, and your consent where analytics cookies are involved.
Who we share it with
We use third-party services that process data on our behalf, including our hosting provider, a content delivery network, and analytics providers. Some of these operate outside South Africa, which means personal information may be transferred across borders under the safeguards those providers offer. We do not sell personal information.
How long we keep it
Analytics data is retained for as long as it is useful for measuring site performance. Correspondence about a listing is kept for as long as needed to show why a change was made.
Your rights under POPIA
- Ask what personal information we hold about you.
- Ask us to correct or delete information that is wrong, misleading or excessive.
- Object to processing based on legitimate interest.
- Complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.
The Information Regulator can be reached at inforegulator.org.za.
If you are listed on this site
If you own or manage a business that appears here and you want the entry corrected or removed, tell us which listing and what is wrong. We will correct or remove it. Corrections to the underlying open dataset also flow through on the next refresh.
Cookies
We use cookies for analytics and for basic site function. You can block or delete cookies in your browser; the directory will still work without them.
